Cardiovascular risk assessment
As a specialist vascular surgeon, Dr Moydien can assist in cardiovascular risk assessments. These assessments are able to screen for cardiovascular disease and help those with high-risk profiles make the health and lifestyle changes necessary to avoid having a cardiovascular event such as a stroke or heart attack.
WHY ARE THEY NECESSARY?
Since cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease and heart attacks, carotid artery disease and strokes, peripheral artery disease and aortic atherosclerosis and aneurysms are common conditions affecting the majority of adults older than 60 years of age, cardiovascular risk assessments are essential. These evaluations are done to screen for cardiovascular diseases, which if left unnoticed, may cause heart attacks, transient ischemic attacks or strokes, gangrene and amputation or limb-loss and abdominal aortic aneurysms. Knowing the patient's risk for a possibly fatal cardiac event like this makes treatment recommendations all the more effective.
WHO IS IN NEED OF A RISK ASSESSMENT?
Patients older than 60 years of age benefit most. Younger patients with any cardiovascular risk factors. Any patient with a family history of cardiovascular disease. Even those without known cardiovascular disease should have this evaluation with the intention to discuss the risks and the importance of prevention. Those diagnosed with cardiovascular disease should have these assessments to guide treatment and lower overall risk.
