Vascular trauma
OVERVIEW
Vascular trauma refers to the injury of a blood vessel, the arteries or veins. Arteries carry blood to an extremity or organ and veins return blood to the heart, as such injuries to these vitals structures result in bleeding and blood loss or blockage and cut-off of blood supply.
Vascular trauma may be caused by a blunt injury where the blood vessel is crushed or stretched, or a penetrating injury when a blood vessel is punctured, torn or severed.
WHAT DOES TREATMENT INVOLVE?
As a vascular surgeon, Dr Moydien can treat arterial and venous vascular trauma including thoraco-abdominal and peripheral vascular injuries. The treatment options include open surgery which usually involves surgical bypass, minimally-invasive endovascular stent graft repair or embolization for bleeding.
